We recently spoke with Mike Lynch from RGF Environmental Group about what this means to our clients who have these units, but even more important - what this means to those of you who may be thinking about purchasing one of these products.
Below is a transcript of our conversation:
Q What kinds of pollutants are in our client's air?
Every house has its own supply of Indoor Air Quality pollutants, we’re constantly introducing them to the space. This includes odors from cooking and pets as well as germs we bring back home from the outside like H1N1. VOC’s can off-gas from paints, pressed wood, and household chemicals like nail polish remover. Mold spores can come in with the outside air and look for a place to grow into new mold colonies. As we build tighter houses to increase our energy efficiency, we lock these pollutants in.
Q Why can’t we just use any UV light for Indoor Air Quality?
Germs and odors need to be exposed to the UV light for a period of time to be destroyed. The air going through your AC system is moving too quickly for most UV lights to have a large effect and the light can only affect the pollutants that make it back to the ductwork. This kind of passive technology is great for keeping stationary objects like your cooling coil clean, but just isn’t designed to be effective on large amounts of air.
Q What makes the Guardian Air different?
The most important thing to get across about the Guardian Air is its proactive ability to kill germs and eliminate odors in the conditioned space. These units don’t need the pollutants to travel through the duct work to be neutralized. Every time your fan blows air it carries the purifying power of natures “Friendly Oxidizers” out into the conditioned space where the “Friendly Oxidizers” begin to attack the Bacteria, Virus, and Mold Spores at the source completely eliminate odors in your home.
Q How effective is the Guardian Air?
Take the human sneeze as an example. Germs come out with a sneeze at 100mph. With the Guardian Air installed, 78% of the germs in a sneeze were neutralized before the germs could make it 3 feet.

In addition, RGF technology, because of it’s ability to kill bacteria and virus on surfaces and in the air, have been specified in the Norovirus/MRSA protection plan of America’s largest restaurant chains, hotel chains, theme parks, cruise lines, public schools and hospitals. Testing the Guardian Air has shown a 99% reduction of H1N1 virus on Stainless steel surfaces, 98% reduction of MRSA, a 99% reduction of Norwalk Virus, a 97% reduction of Mold Spores, even a 99+% reduction of SARS and Avian Flu.
Q Talk specifically about H1N1 Testing
The Guardian Air is not a medical product and is not intended to diagnose, mitigate, prevent, treat or cure the H1N1 Flu Virus. In preliminary lab testing performed by Kansas State University the Guardian Air inactivated 99+% of H1N1 virus on stainless steel surfaces exposed to the air containing the “friendly oxidizers” created by the Guardian Air. Q How Does It Work?
The breakthrough in the RGF advanced oxidation technologies is a group of oxidants known as Hydroperoxides. Hydroperoxides have been a common part of our environment for over 3.5 billion years. Hydroperoxides are created in our atmosphere whenever three components are present: oxygen molecules, water vapor and energy. The Guardian Air units by RGF have the ability to create hydroperoxides which are very effective at destroying harmful microbes in the air and on surfaces. As oxidants, they do this by either destroying the microbe through a process known as cell lysing or by breaking down the bonds of odors and gases rendering them harmless. The amount of hydroperoxides required to accomplish this task in a conditioned space is well below the level that is constantly in our outside air. The Advanced Oxidation Technology found in RGF's Guardian Air product family has brought the oxidants found in the outside air into the conditioned space of your home.
Q How do we know it is safe?
It is a normal reaction to question the long term safety of any product that is effective and to challenge the use of new or "breakthrough" technology. This type of question has become common as our litigious society has taught us to question things that significantly outperform existing methods or products.
There is no known case of hydroperoxides ever creating a health risk. Considering we have been exposed to hydroperoxides in nature since the day man first walked on the planet, it is a reasonable assumption that hydroperoxides do not constitute a health risk.
